Vincent van Gogh’s vision on his life and his art (1853-1890)
Angeline Bremer (associated expert with the Kroller-Muller Museum)
At the age of sixteen Vincent van Gogh began working in an art gallery. The love and knowledge of art that he developed in The Hague, London and Paris were to shape the rest of his life. In 1880 he decided to become an artist. In Holland he concentrated on drawing, later on painting subjects from the daily life of labourers and peasants. Under the influence of the Impressionists his work underwent a fundamental change. Unique are the late works with subjects as fruit trees in blossom, sunflowers and also portraits. The direct brushstrokes, radiant colours and personal approach to his subjects made him one of the greatest artists.
