Plastic materials that are intended to be used for food packaging have to undergo specific migration testing in order to evaluate whether they comply with national and EU laws regarding the transfer of substances from plastic into foods (migration). Carrying out these specific migration tests is very time consuming and is subject to large errors. Certified reference materials (CRMs) – plastics with known properties and known specific migration values – would be a useful tool for laboratories to evaluate their performance, but also for the validation of computer models that can simulate and under certain conditions replace experimental specific migration tests. In this study, it is demonstrated that the production and certification of reference materials for specific migration testing is possible, and a procedure for the development of 6 CRMs is described. The materials developed during the study are used for a series of additional research aspects such as analytical method development and migration modelling.
