For decades, reducing the financial burden has been the motivation of China’s government to allow the participation of private traders into China’s grain market. Since then, State Grain Trade Companies were no longer the only trader in the market. The opening of China’s grain market has influences on the grain prices that farm households receive. Changes in grain prices influence the consumption and production decisions of farm households, which affect farm households’ well-being. Findings of this thesis show that the opening of China’s grain market has relieved China’s government from the fiscal burden and farm households do benefit from the opening of grain market.
