Neurobiologist Jeroen Geurts sketches a brief history of consciousness research. Starting with Aristotle and until the present day, consciousness has been associated with ‘the soul’. How come?
Geurts will touch on contemporary ideas about consciousness, and will reveal how disturbances of consciousness may help scientists to understand the basic principles of this phenomenon. He will review the MRI-scan as a method to deal with these issues, and will try to define the road ahead in consciousness research.
Jeroen Geurst works as a neuroscientist at VU University Medical Center, Amsterdam. He published among others the book ‘Gray Matters’, see www.jeroengeurts.nl.
This lecture is part of a larger series on consciousness. Next lecture: Tuesday the 6th of March, by professor Wim van de Grind, on ‘consciousness in humans and animals’.
