On Tuesday 28 April 2009, Ezekiel Hamisi Goromela will defend his PhD thesis entitled‘Feeding and Management Strategies for Rural Poultry Production in Central Tanzania‘. In his thesis, Goromela shows that productivity of village chickens under scavenging system is generally low. Supplementation of chicks or hens with either high protein or low energy diets in addition to scavenging resulted in improved body weight gains and egg production. Early separation of chicks from their mothers at an age of 4 and 8 weeks reduced significantly the length of reproduction cycles which increased the laying performances of hens without compromising chicks’ survival or growth rate. The results show that the commonly observed low production performance of indigenous chickens is mainly due to inappropriate management conditions under which the birds are raised rather than their low genetic potential. Thus the productivity of indigenous hens can be increased by supplementary feeding and relieving the hens from some aspects of the reproductive burden such as from brooding and rearing.
