It is often thought that international migration and globalization processes lead to the destruction of local communities in Third World countries. Research conducted in the community of Usibamba in the Peruvian Central Andes shows that this need not be the case. Rather than the demise of community international migration has led to a revival of local forms of organization and of communal life. This is shown through a detailed study of male villagers who migrate to the USA to work as shepherds in sheep ranches. Migration has led to an intensive flow of money, people, goods and ideas from the USA to Usibamba and vice versa. Local livelihoods have come to depend increasingly on international migration, while migrants continue participating in communal projects. As a result villagers in Usibamba feel part of the global world, while celebrating their cultural particularities.
