Residence permit current students

This information is intended for WU students who need to extent their residence permit for the purpose of Study.

You need a residence permit for the duration of your studies, but the actual card is only issued for a maximum duration of one academic year. If you stay for a longer period, you need to extend it. Below is described how you can do this. Note however that there is a limit to the number of years you are allowed to stay in the Netherlands as a student.

The extension of your residence permit is your own responsibility. You have to apply for the extension before your current residence permit card expires. Failure to do so will have severe consequences for your stay in the Netherlands.

Please choose the categorie that applies to your situation

Students who need an extention (including information for students graduating in September)

Students who changed their MSc programme or educational institute

Students who are planning to graduate before the academic year is over and want to return to their home country

Students who are planning to stay after graduation. (Search Year).

Extentions submitted, but I will be abroad when my current permit expires (Return visa)

The Dutch Government has set a maximum amount of years you are allowed to stay in the Netherlands for the purpose of study. The basic rules are described here.

NOTE: Recently the price for the replacement of a residence permit in case of theft or loosing the permit has been increased to € 100,-.
