Continuing for the MSc degree

There may be opportunities to continue for an MSc degree at Wageningen University as a follow-up of your exchange programme.

The MSc degree from Wageningen University is known worldwide and recognized when applying for jobs. All international master programmes at Wageningen University are accredited by the Dutch Ministry of Education.

If you are thinking of staying in Wageningen after your exchange at Wageningen University to complete the MSc programme at WU, the first thing you should do is contact the MSc director or study advisor of the MSc programme you wish to attend. They can tell you in advance what your chances are of being admitted to the programme. In general if you have studied at least 3 years on BSc level and obtained good marks for the courses you attended at Wageningen University you probably have a good chance in being admitted. You should discuss your study programme, possibilities for exemptions ed. with the programme director/study advisor so that you have a realistic idea of how long it will take you to finish the MSc programme. Also you should notify your exchange coordinator at WU, he/she can help you to get through the procedures. At the Student Service Centre (SSC) there is a application form for 'switchers'. Don't forget to discuss your plans with your home university.

In principle you can study at Wageningen University through LLL-Erasmus exchange programme for a period of up to 12 months. You do not have to pay tuition fees when registered at Wageningen University as an Exchange Student. Thus, if you wish to complete the MSc programme, it is advisable to prolong your stay as an Exchange student at Wageningen University until the end of the academic year. You will have to arrange the extension of the exchange period with the exchange coordinator of your own home university who will in turn notify the exchange coordinator of Wageningen University. The exchange coordinator of Wageningen University will write a statement that the prolongation of your stay is accepted and will notify the Student Service Centre (SSC).
Of course, your home exchange coordinator should agree with your plans to finish the MSc degree at Wageningen University. Your home exchange coordinator can inform you on the requirements for obtaining a second MSc degree from your home university, please make sure that you are informed well before you make your decision.

Please see the MSc admission requirements. In general you will have to meet the following requirements:

· BSc level (minimum of 3 years of study in your home institution)

· Good working knowledge of the English language and

· Good results in the first year of your study at Wageningen University.

You should submit your application to the Academic Committee on Admissions. Complete the MSc application form and submit the following documents:

· Bachelor degree (or equivalent; minimum of 180 ECTS)

· Transcript of academic record

· English language proficiency test results – tests can be taken at Language Services

· Statement of motivation

· Curriculum vitae

Tuition fees
In the Netherlands, an annual tuition fee must be paid for university education. When registered as a regular student you will have to pay tuition fees. The amount depends on your nationality, for EU members the tuition fee is about € 1.700 per year (this amount changes every year, for correct amounts please check the MSc website). The fees for non-EU students differ, please see the overview of study expenses.

If you have been studying as an Exchange student at WU for 12 months it normally takes approximately one extra year to finish a 2-year MSc programme at Wageningen University.

If you come from an EU country and you study in the Netherlands, you are eligible for a loan for tuition fees for the period you are registered as a regular student. Loan tuition fees

From 1 September 2007 EU/EEA students who are not entitled to full study grants for a Dutch course in higher education can apply for a loan to pay their tuition fees. This loan is known as `loan tuition fees’ and is paid monthly. You repay the sum you borrowed after your studies.

Amount of loan tuition fees

Students from EU/EEA countries and Switzerland who are under 30 pay the legal tuition fees for a full-time study at an institute of higher education or university funded by the Dutch government. If you comply with the conditions for loan tuition fees (see below), you can always borrow the sum of the legal college fees in the form of a loan tuition fees. If you want a lower loan tuition fees, this is also possible. You indicate on the application form how much you want to borrow per month. 

Conditions for loan tuition fees

You must: 

· be under the age of 30 when you apply for loan tuition fees for the first time

· be enrolled as a full-time student for an accredited course at a funded or recognized institute of higher education or university be enrolled as a full-time student for an accredited course at a funded or recognized institute of higher education or university 

· have a national insurance number in the Netherlands 

· have a bank account, other than a savings account, in the Netherlands               

Application

In order to apply for a loan tuition fees, you must complete the form Application for loan tuition fees for students from EU/EEA countries and send it to the IB-Groep together with the documents requested. Soon you can here download the application form. Make your application in time. Note; you cannot apply for loan tuition fees if you do not have a Dutch national insurance number. If you do not have a national insurance number, you can apply for one from an office of the inland revenue in your Dutch place of residence (or in the nearest city).

Contribution to tuition fees

If you received a contribution to your tuition fees from the IB-group in the 2008-2009 academic year, you continue to be entitled to this contribution from the IB-group every year as long as you continue to apply for it and receive it. As a student in higher education, you receive a sum of a maximum of € 1,089.24 for the 2009-2010 academic year. This sum is equal to twelve times a basic grant (without travel contribution and supplements) for a student in higher education living at home in accordance with the norm of September 2008 (€ 90.77). In principle you can apply for this contribution to tuition fees for a maximum of seven years.

Age

If you reach the age of 30 during your course, you may be eligible for a contribution up to the age of 34. In that case you must comply with a number of conditions:                                     

· you must have started on a course in the Netherlands before the age of 30 

· you must have received a contribution to tuition fees or study funding for that course before the age of 30

· you must apply for and receive a contribution every year

· you must not interrupt the course in the Netherlands.       

Applications

In order to apply for a contribution to tuition fees, you must complete the form Application for a contribution to tuition fees for students from EU/EEA countries and send it to the IB-Groep together with the documents requested. If your address has not changed since the last application, you will be sent the form at home. If you have not received the form, telephone the IB-Groep: +31 (0)50 599 77 55. 

Make the application in time. You must submit your application within four months after the month in which you start your course. In that case you may be eligible for a full contribution. If you apply after that time, you will only receive a partial contribution. In that case, you are entitled to the contribution from the first month after making the application. No contribution is made for past academic years.

Example
If you start your studies in higher education on 1 September 2007, send your application before 1 February 2008. If you only apply, for example, in February 2008, you will receive 6/12 of the maximum contribution (March to August 2008).

Stopping your studies

If you stop your studies in the Netherlands, you must inform the IB-Groep  by sending a letter to:

If you stop your studies and are removed from the register at an earlier date, your contribution will also be amended. In that case you will have to repay a proportional amount. You will be notified of this.
