HEC - Practical and Financial info

Back

After ‘first contact’ of the HEC PhD candidate, Wageningen University cannot yet formally admit a candidate to the PhD Programme. Formal Admittance can only be given by the Academic Board, after:

1.       Diploma evaluation + Proof of proficiency in the English language

2.       Approval of the research proposal by a Graduate School

3.       Approval of the Training and Supervision Plan by a Graduate School

4.       Payment of the University fee

For formal admittance to the PhD Programme, the standard procedures apply (see § 8).

If a chairgroup is interested in the research proposal of a HEC PhD candidate, the chairgroup can send a letter of ‘provisional acceptance’ to the PhD programme of Wageningen University. This letter states that a PhD candidate is accepted by a supervisor / chairgroup to start the PhD Programme, under the condition that the PhD candidate can meet all the (qualitative and financial) requirements of Wageningen University. Furthermore, it is advisable to briefly comment on the PhD Programme of Wageningen University: Wageningen University conducts a ‘Go / No-go’ evaluation of all its PhD students before the end of the first year of their PhD programmes. Only after a positive decision will the PhD student be allowed to continue the PhD programme.

The PhD Fellowship: 4 years
HEC PhD candidates come to Wageningen for a period of 4 years max!
(WU category: ‘Guest PhD student
). HEC scholarship recipients undertake to return to Pakistan with a PhD degree at the end of the 4-year period, and to work in Pakistan for at least 60 months. If they do not return with a PhD degree, they will have to pay the scholarship back.

The MSc - PhD Fellowship: 1 + 4 years
All of the above is also valid for this category. (available funding: 5 x €4500). This construction is only available for fellowship candidates with a MSc diploma which does not give immediate access to the PhD Programme of Wageningen University.
Wageningen University can however accept these PhD candidates. The first year must be used as a preparatory year for the PhD programme, and to get formal admittance to the PhD programme:
-Qualifying examination: several disciplinary MSc courses
-Writing the PhD proposal
-preparation of the TSP
Wageningen University does not award an MSc degree with this construction!

For most WU chairgroups / departments a HEC fellowship does not cover the costs of a 4-year PhD project. HEC can only finance “tuition fees” to a maximum of €4500 per year.

The costs for the Wageningen University PhD programme:

  • €5000 University fee, one time only
  • Departmental fees (varies per Department)
  • The actual research costs

The fellowship covers:

  • Living allowance for the PhD candidate for a max. period of 4 years (€975 per month). The PhD candidate should finance AON health insurance costs from this allowance (approx. €40 per month).
  • Visa costs for the Netherlands (1 time only).
  • Travel costs (1 time only)
  • "Tuition fee" of €4500 per year (max.)
