Wageningen University Sandwich PhD fellowships are sometimes used as a first step to other (often financially more rewarding) fellowships. This is attractive for all parties as it gives;
- more financial resources for the recipient (the PhD fellow and the research group),
- more prestige and more possibilities for further support
This situation should not be changed. However, once this happens, the Wageningen University Sandwich PhD fellowship is discontinued and the remaining funding is not available for the recipient research group (with another candidate on the same or another topic). Such practices are undermining the step forward that needs to be made with this programme, i.e. not necessarily more PhD students but better PhD students.
For the same reasons it is not possible to apply for a partial fellowship, or to change candidates. There is a call for proposals twice per year. All applications are evaluated and compared, based on the following selection criteria:
- The candidate’s linkage with the home institute
- The quality of a candidate
The quality of the proposal
Requests for partial fellowships or a change of candidates (after the selection procedure) can therefore not be accepted.
