Training and Supervision Plan

Within six months following the appointment, the PhD student and his/her supervisor will formulate a Training and Supervision Plan (TSP), based on the regulations of the involved Graduate School. The education programme is formalised in the Training and Supervision Plan (TSP). This document contains agreements on educational activities, teaching duties and supervision. It is formulated by the PhD candidate and the supervisor(s) in consultation with the Graduate School and supervisors. In order to be approved, the document has to be signed by the candidate, supervisor(s) (promotor) and finally the chair of the Graduate School Education Committee. Once approved, rights and obligations can be obtained from the TSP by the PhD candidate and supervisor(s). However, it should be emphasised that the TSP is a plan, and subjects in the TSP can always be updated or adjusted in the course of the PhD Programme. A TSP form can be obtained at the Graduate School.

Specific requirements of a TSP may vary between the different Graduate Schools. Additional information can be obtained at the concerned Graduate School. I In general, up to 15% of a PhD student’s time is spent on educational activities and a maximum of 10% on teaching duties. The remaining time is invested in research.

PhD candidates who meet the requirements, can receive an education budget  of € 2500. This is an allowance for the entire length of the PhD programme and is to be used for the realisation of the Training and Supervision Plan.

The realisation of a TSP and obtaining an Education Certificate is directly linked to the compensation each chair group receives for every PhD graduate. If a PhD candidate does not obtain an Education Certificate, a chair group will receive 15.000 euro less PhD compensation (promotievergoeding).

Education Certificate
After having completed the TSP related education activities, a PhD student sends a written request to the Graduate School for the Education Certificate. The request must be submitted at least 15 weeks prior to the public defence of the thesis. When all education criteria have been met, the education activities must be included in the thesis. An Education Certificate is awarded after the thesis defence.
