WGS Course: Information Literacy, including Introduction Endnote

Introduction

This course is offered by Wageningen Graduate Schools and organised by Wageningen UR Library. It covers the following topics:

  • Effective use of Wageningen Digital Library, including My Library, bibliographic databases on different platforms, portals, electronic journals, electronic books, etc.
  • Getting to know the different types of scientific information sources: when to use what.
  • How to select proper information sources for your research.
  • Introduction to Citation Search and getting acquainted with Impact factors of journals. 
  • How to manage your references? One of the programs that is used worldwide is Endnote. EndNote is citation management software that allows you to organise your own literature references. It also facilitates the layout of literature references in articles, books or theses. EndNote is closely integrated with your word processor, and makes the inclusion of references in your reports and articles really easy. During this part of course you will learn the basics of working with Endnote.
  • Individual instruction and help in developing a balanced search plan, that will be beneficial throughout your PhD period.

Programme

Programme Day 1 (8:30-17:00)

Effective use of the Wageningen Digital Library, including:

  • My Library (Customization, Alerts on new additions, TOC alerts, Alerts on bibliographic databases, and Off campus access)
  • Portals
  • Bibliographic databases on different platforms
  • Electronic journals
  • Electronic books

Citation Searching and Impact Factors

  • Web of Science
  • Essential Science Indicators
  • Journal Citation Reports
  • Scopus

Programme Day 2 (9:00-12.30) 

Intensive practical on EndNote.

  • EndNote has become the standard for bibliographic management at Wageningen UR. EndNote facilitates smooth less integration of personalised bibliographies with word processing software. It makes easy the inclusion of selected references into draft articles, reports, documents etc. according to predefined formats.

Developing a personal information plan (appointment with information specialist)
You will draft a strategy to satisfy your information needs covering the PhD period. You will develop your personal search plan in cooperation with the information specialists of Wageningen UR Library. This part of the course consists of intensively supervised development of an all inclusive information plan for each participant individually, that will benefit your PhD research period.

For individual instruction on your search plan you will have to make an appointment with one of the above-mentioned information specialists.


Course fee

This course is offered by Wageningen Graduate Schools (WGS)

PhDs of WU* with an approved Education Plan (TSP) of one of the WGS** and postdocs of WU registered at one of the WGS** will pay 140 euro. All others pay 280 euro.

*  or PhDs graduating at WU / participation is possible until one year after the PhD contract has ended

The fee includes study and training material, coffee / tea and lunches
