Then this course could be just the thing to assist you in building and empowering your attitude, behaviour and position in your professional surroundings.
In combining some theory with lots of practice, you will be able to enhance your interpersonal skills and experience the effects of different styles of behaviour. By developing a more assertive style of behaviour it will become easier to obtain your (professional) goals, as well as obtaining them in a more effective way. We will focus on learning how to communicate effectively, stand up for yourself, create win-win situations and sometimes confront others.
There are different styles of assertive behaviour. During the training you will learn the differences, their flaws and effectiveness; you will discover which style fits you best and you will learn to choose behaviour that will help you to pursue your professional goals and survive effortlessly in professional settings.

Target group: PhDs (focus on 1st or 2nd year PhDs since then one has optimal use of the training)

Course duration: 2 days and a personal coaching meeting

Programme
Before the course:
Before the course starts all participants will fill in a form with a few questions regarding their behavioural preferences. This form will be used to get a clear picture of what aspects of effective behaviour the individual participants would like to work on during the course. This form will be send to you after registration.
Day 1
Morning session:
Theory on assertive behaviour and effective behaviour.
Exercises dealing with different styles of assertive behaviour.
Assignments aimed at empowerment and building on your attitude and confidence.
Afternoon session:
Building a bridge between theory and your everyday practice.
Making an inventory of your own coping styles.
Theory and exercises on the effects of (non-verbal) communication.
Personalised assignments.
Day 2
Morning session:
Role plays with actor to practice with different professional situations.
Discussion on personal assignments and inventory of possible experienced blockages.
Setting goals for the next month.
Afternoon session:
Intervision in small groups about one's questions
Role plays
Evaluation intervision en role play

After the course:
About one month after the course has ended participants will have a personal coaching meeting with one of the trainers. This personal coaching session will be used to discuss the experiences with the personalised assignments and goals. Advice will be given on how to deal with pitfalls and other difficulties and on how to make the best use of what has been discussed during the training sessions.
Course fee
This course is offered by Wageningen Graduate Schools (WGS)
PhDs of WU* with an approved Education Plan (TSP) of one of the WGS** and postdocs of WU registered at one of the WGS** will pay 205 euro. All others pay 410 euro.
* or PhDs graduating at WU / participation is possible until one year after the PhD contract has ended
** EPS, CERES, MGS, PE&RC, VLAG, WIAS, WIMEK
The fee includes study and training material, coffee / tea and lunches
Cancellation condition: If you registered for this course and cancel after four weeks before the course starts, the full course fee will be charged (410 euro).

Deadline for registration for the first course is Friday April the 16th and for second course October the 3rd.
On 16 April/3 October the course organisers will determine the number of participants. The course will only take place with 9 or more participants. You will be informed about this by the course organisers.
