Frequently Asked Questions
Below you will find the answers to the most frequently asked questions concerning application and admission to a MSc programme. Please scroll through this section; it will answer the most important questions you might have about applying for a MSc programme at Wageningen University. If you do not find an answer to your question, or if you need further clarification concerning one of the items, please feel free to contact the Student Service Centre (SSC). See Question 1 for the addresses you can contact with your questions.

When you send an e-mail, please make sure you include your full name and file number (see question 2.) in the mail. If you do not yet have a file number, then please include:

  • your full name
  • your date of birth
  • your selected MSc programme
  • your nationality.

Please do not send multiple copies of e-mails, and do not send the same e-mail to more than one person or address at the Student Service Centre (SSC). This will only delay any reply. Please allow up to two weeks for a reply. The SSC tries to respond to each e-mail immediately, but during busy periods it may take several days before a reply can be sent.

        2. What is a file number?
        After you have submitted your application with the required documents, it will be registered by the Student Service Centre. A file number will then be assigned to your application. This number will be included in the letter you will receive after your application is registered (see question 6). Please use this number in all your correspondence with the Student Service Centre.



        3. I want to apply for a MSc programme at Wageningen University. What should I do?
        More detailed information on: the MSc programmes. The fully documented application should be submitted to the Student Service Centre. Please note that the application procedure can take up to 8 weeks. Please keep this in mind when applying for the MSc programme at Wageningen University especially when you intend applying for a (NFP) fellowship.         5. Which English language tests are accepted for admission to Wageningen University?
        Check which English language tests are acceptable.

        Please make sure that the exam you take is an official TOEFL or IELTS exam. Some institutes give exams under similar names, but Wageningen University can accept only the results from the official tests. For students holding the Chinese nationality: please keep in mind that the IELTS test is a requirement to obtain the NESO certificate (see question 21)!

        6. I have sent my application to Wageningen University. Will I receive confirmation when it is received?
        Upon receipt of your application you will be sent a registration email, with, as attached file, a registration letter. This letter includes your file number (your username) and password to enable you to track the progress of your application in our Student Tracking Admission Registration System (STARS). Please note that only fully documented applications can be submitted to the Academic Committee on Admissions and if your application is incomplete a list of documentation or information that is missing from your application will also be mentioned in the letter. Always include your file number in all correspondence with the Student Service Centre.

        7. I have filled in and mailed my application for an MSc programme. Unfortunately, I could not submit all the required documents. How will this effect my application?
        Your application will be registered, but your application will not be submitted to the Academic Committee on Admissions before it is complete. Please send the missing documents as soon as possible. Please note that the admission procedure is a lengthy one, so do not wait too long to complete your application. Only fully documented applications can be submitted to Academic Committee on Admissions. It is therefore recommended to only send COMPLETE applications.

        8. I am required to submit the abstract of my thesis. What does this mean?
        This is the abstract or summary of the thesis you completed as part of your BSc programme (or equivalent study). The abstract can give the Academic Committee on Admissions an idea of your ability to conduct scientific work on a specific subject, preferably in the field to which you are applying. Although the abstract is not obligatory, it should be noted that all extra information can assist the Committee when considering your application.

        11. I have sent my confirmation form to the Student Service Centre. What should I do next?
        Please read 'Welcome to Wageningen'. In addition, please send a copy of your passport to the Student Service Centre (internationalstudentsupport@wur.nl) as soon as possible. (see question 14.)

        12. Can you provide me with information on fellowships?
        You can find information on fellowships on www.wageningenuniversity.eu. Please note that detailed information on the Netherlands Fellowship Programme (NFP) can be found on www.nuffic.nl/nfp. More information about fellowships can also be found on www.grantfinder.nl.

        13. I am a national from a country outside the European Union. How can I ensure that I can get to the Netherlands on time for my studies (assuming that I am admitted)?
        This is a good question. The procedure (after you are admitted to the MSc programme) is as follows: Please confirm your intention to study at Wageningen University by returning the confirmation form as soon as possible. This can also be done on-line. The Student Service Centre (SSC) will send you or your sponsor an invoice. As soon as the payment and a copy of your passport (see question 14) is received, the SSC will apply for an entry visa (an MVV or ATR (‘Machtiging Voorlopig Verblijf’ = authorisation for temporary residence)) for you. Please DO NOT apply for the visa yourself. It is of utmost importance that all procedures are completed as soon as possible. Please note that we can only apply for a visa for you when the total amount required for the first year has been paid into our bank account.

        14. What should I know about the required copy of my passport?
        To enable Wageningen University to apply for a MVV or ATR (‘Machtiging Voorlopig Verblijf’ = authorisation for temporary residence) on your behalf we will require a copy of your passport. The copy must contain the following page(s):your photograph, your full name, expiration date of the passport (it has to be valid for the full length of the study period) and passport number.You can send a scanned copy by e-mail as an attachment (preferred) to internationalstudentsupport@wur.nl or by fax to the following number: +31 317 484 464. If you send it by fax, make sure that the photograph is clearly visible. Poor quality copies are not accepted by the Dutch authorities for the MVV application.

        If you are residing in an other country then the one  you have the nationality of, please provide us also with proof of legal residence of that country. This can be of importance in the MVV application procedure.


        15. Where can I request a NUFFIC (NFP-AP) fellowship application form?
        The NUFFIC application form can be obtained from the Dutch Embassy in your home country or from www.nuffic.nl. Further details (deadlines, eligibility, etc.) on the Netherlands Fellowship Programme (NFP) can be found on the NUFFIC website: www.nuffic.nl.


        16. I applied for a NUFFIC (NFP-AP) fellowship, but I have not received a decision. What should I write on the confirmation form in the financial statement section?
        Please state on the confirmation form that you have applied for a fellowship from NUFFIC. Return the form to us, preferably via STARS, but email or regular mail is also possible. Do not worry if you have not yet received a decision about the fellowship. You will be informed by the Student Service Centre if you have (or have not) been awarded a fellowship. Please note that competition for a NFP fellowship under the Netherlands Fellowship Programme is strong and it is advisable to try and obtain financial support from other sources.

        According to the Rules of the Nuffic 50% of the fellowships are granted to female applicants.


        17. I have applied for a NUFFIC (NFP-AP) fellowship. Have you received it?
        Your fellowship application has been submitted via the Royal Netherlands Embassy to NUFFIC. We will receive all the applications sometime in June. You will be informed of the outcome of your application as soon as possible after June.

        18. I have applied for a NUFFIC (NFP-AP) fellowship, which I also stated on the confirmation form. When will I be informed about the decision?
        As soon as the result of the NFP application is known, you will be informed about whether or not you have been awarded a fellowship. If you have been awarded a fellowship, you will be contacted by the Student Service Centre about the following steps that you need to take.

        19. How should I make housing arrangements, and what kind of housing is available at Wageningen University?
        Wageningen University has accommodation for all international students (if required). The University does not provide housing, but cooperates with a housing agency (IDEALIS). Further information is available on www.idealis.nl. You can consider the different types of accommodation available, rooms, prices etc. on www.idealis.nl. You can inform us of your preference at studenthousing@wur.nl.

        Please note that we will try to provide you with the type of room you prefer, but we cannot guarantee this due to limited availability.

        20. I have applied, but I will be unable to study at Wageningen University this year; I hope to enrol for the next MSc academic year. What should I do to make sure that I will be accepted?
        Admissions are only valid for one year. If you want to defer your admission to the next academic year, you will have to send a new application. The application procedure will be available on the website as of June. Please note that you will also have to re-apply for fellowships.

        21. I am a citizen of the People’s Republic of China. I heard about the NESO certificate, but what does it mean?
        Students who have the Chinese nationality and are planning to study in the Netherlands are obliged to obtain a NESO Certificate. The NESO Certificate is essential in the MVV application procedure. Without the NESO Certificate the Immigration Office will not process the MVV application.How can you apply for a NESO Certificate?
