In the mid 90-ties CGIAR has established regionally oriented programs (Ecoregional Programs) and System-wide programs. The first ones have an integrated regional focus whereas the latter have a thematic global scope. The System-wide Livestock Program was set-up in 1995 to build linkage with plant-science programs and to strengthen ongoing CGIAR programs to address development-oriented livestock research. Its objective is to improve livestock feed resources and natural resource management in crop-livestock agriculture. The SLP works through ecoregional consortia consisting of national agricultural research systems of developing countries, advanced research institutes of developed countries and international agricultural research centres. The objective of this project is to support development of technology and policy options for improved production and utilisation of feed resources in rainfed crop-livestock systems and natural resource management. Recently a review was undertaken to evaluate the SLP’s progress and advise on the next steps. It discussed ILRI’s role as convenor, achievements in bringing stakeholders together and implementing effective research and dissemination of gained knowledge and technologies. The presentation will put forward the progress made, lessons learnt in forging collaborative links at regional and national level and highlight achievements and constraints. Potential areas for collaboration will be indicated.
