Land drainage is a powerful tool for agricultural land and water management. In the world’s humid regions, land drainage is one of the main methods for reclaiming and improving agricultural lands; in the world’s arid regions, where sustainable agriculture is not possible without irrigation, land drainage is an absolute necessity for preventing waterlogging and salinisation. Every year since 1962, ILRI has held an International Course on Land Drainage to contribute to the capacity building of institutes that are active in land and water management. ILRI’s International Course on Land Drainage trains the staff of these institutes in appropriate drainage principles and applications for the control of waterlogging and salinity. The Course is intended for drainage professionals (especially those in developing countries), for teachers and trainers in drainage-related fields, and for researchers who wish to learn more about the practical side of drainage.
