Sustainability in biological production systems, like conventional or organic farming, needs a thorough assessment of all environmental indicators throughout the entire production chain. For example the improvement we have achieved in the past decades regarding minimising waste in the agricultural production chain in the northern countries (in Europe), seems to be compensated by the increase in household waste at the consumers. Therefore it is very important to assess the impact of different environmental indicators and to apply them in different ways. In Wageningen the approach of system analysis has been developed to a high level. At present the Life Cycle Analysis method is being probed for its applicability to the problem of sustainability. By comparing the different methods we will get deeper insight in the possibility of predicting the impact certain production systems will have on our environment.
