 Mathematical and statistical methods are progressing along new roads as they are increasingly driven and inspired by practical problems and applications. The practical approach, however, serves basically as an inspiration for development and not so much as simply problem solving. In PE & RC attention is increasingly on images and patterns, like yield maps, remote sensing images and patterns of the spread of beetles. Many attempts have been made to analyze these, and successful applications can be shown. On the other hand, much statistical science that was developed in the past still is useful and serves to better address issues of modern system management. We therefore start the seminar series with a seminar on modern mathematics and statistics.
