Dairy cattle breeding is an international business. Exchange of genetic material is facilitated by an international breeding value estimation. National recording schemes provide information for national evaluations that is further processed by the INTERBULL Centre to obtain international evaluations. Basic methodology applied is the so-called 'Multi-trait Across Country Evaluation' (MACE). A continuous upgrading of MACE is practised to implement new scientific knowledge, to address new problems arising from current experiences and to optimally use upgraded computer facilities. Important current issues are multiple trait evaluations, random regression test-day models, connectedness of data and trends in Mendelian sampling terms. Of course, these issues are also of importance for national evaluations. Data centres, breeding organisations, universities and research institutes work closely together on these issues. This seminar is organised to discuss these issues in (inter)national breeding value estimation, with emphasis on dairy cattle. Four invited presentations provide an overview on international evaluation (use of MACE), benefits of multiple trait evaluations, use of random regression test-day models and the importance of data connectedness.
