Nijsse deed fundamenteel onderzoek naar (de problemen met) wateropname in snijbloemen. De anatomie van de stengel is in kaart gebracht. De anatomie van het watertransportsysteem blijkt van grote invloed op het ontstaan en herstel van luchtembolie, dat slap blad veroorzaakt en daardoor een kortere houdbaarheid op de vaas. Nijsse heeft aan de hand van een fysisch model aangetoond welke anatomische factoren de dynamiek van embolie beïnvloeden. Veredelaars, telers en handelaren kunnen nu gerichter werken aan snijbloemen met een betere houdbaarheid.
