This study was carried out to critically examine the state of art of institutional innovation and to identify the theories of action informing it in rural research and development (R&D) organisations. The general aim was to better understand the processes, under which theories of action for management and facilitation of institutional innovation are generated, reconfigureated and appropriated by participant actors. The purpose is to contribute to the construction of a new theory of action for the management and facilitation of institutional innovation. The methodological strategy was based mainly on qualitative methods, such as: participatory action-reflection, interpretative content analysis and face-to-face interviews. As part of the research findings it is argued that institutional innovation processed of rural R&D organisations should go through the : (i) past-present (de)construction; and (ii) present-future (re)construction of their theories of action for institutional change. In addition, international co-operation for capacity building and facilitators of institutional change should support local actors in their effort to develop and strengthen their own conceptual, methodological and cultural capacities.
