According to agreements, energy consumption and the use of chemical biocides in greenhouse horticulture have to be reduced. Dynamic temperature and humidity regimes were designed for that purpose. Simulations have shown that the dynamic temperature or humidity regimes alone can reduce annual energy consumption compared to a commonly applied rigid regime by 23% or 18%, respectively. When the two dynamic regimes (temperature and humidity) were merged and evaluated in an experiment with cut chrysanthemum, plant dry weight even increased. With this regime, however, also stem elongation increased and due to that plant quality decreased. Therefore, a temperature regime controlling stem elongation and energy consumption was designed and analysed, too. The trade off between the two targets to attain short compact plants and maximum energy saving could not be solved. Also, the designed regimes were based on many arbitrary assumptions and more research is needed for parameterisation. However, a promising basis for more dynamic greenhouse climate regimes for sustainable greenhouse cultivation was created.
