The 1990s saw a multiplication of debates on the social, economic, cultural, and political transformations major cities are undergoing with the advent of a globalised world order. The aim of this study is to bring an ecological perspective into this discourse and explore how globalisation may be put to work for improving the urban environment worldwide. Focusing on the premises of a number of multinational companies in Amsterdam, São Paulo, and Beijing, this study analyses how local and global actors are stimulating environmental innovations into ‘transnational buildings’ – buildings which stand at the interface between urban (local) policies and the global strategies of multinational firms. Which actors are influencing this process, which are hindering, and how can the greening of buildings be furthered within the global capitalistic framework that now governs the development of large metropolises?
