Agroforestry parkland in semi-arid West Africa is a traditional rural land use system, which allows farmers to grow annual crops in combination with useful trees. In addition to cereals, products such as vegetables, fruits, vegetable oil, firewood, fodder, and medicines are obtained from the trees. The present decline of the parkland diversity is therefore very detrimental to the rural farmers who heavily rely on these natural resources.
This thesis focused on assessing the woody species diversity present in the parklands and the effects of the anthropogenic disturbances. Management options are then proposed, which combines the multiple functions of parklands with the actions required for sustainable management. Species with proven important economic value such as Vitellaria paradoxa, Parkia biglobosa, Adansonia digitata, Tamarindus indica should be promoted at farmers’ level.
