Recent changes in China are obvious when walking down shopping streets in Beijing or Shanghai. Travelling through the countryside, however, gives a less rosy picture. Rising incomes concentrate in urban areas along the coast, attracting rural migrants in search for a better life.
This study explores the impact of rural-urban migration on a village economy in Jiangxi Province, China. We develop a model of the village economy that captures rural household decisions and interactions among households in village markets. Analyzing the structure of the village economy, we find that households remaining in the village benefit from migration by renting land and receiving cash transfers from migratory households. Analyzing the impact of an increase in migration for the households that have the necessary social networks, we find village markets for draught power and locally produced consumption goods dispersing part of the benefits to households lacking the social networks for migration.
