For devices like solar cells charge separation (electron-hole formation) and independent transport of the charges to the electrodes is very important. Materials that are capable of transporting holes are for example columnar discotic liquid crystals. However, the stability of their liquid crystalline phases should to be improved for useful application. In this thesis stabilization of columnar discotic liquid crystals by intermolecular hydrogen bonding was investigated. Several triphenylene molecules were synthesized and investigated that form discotic liquid crystalline phases stabilized by intermolecular hydrogen bonds. Some of these compounds show very high charge carrier mobilities of their columnar discotic liquid crystalline phases; in fact the highest ever reported for triphenylene compounds.
