To advance the knowledge of the evolution of the immune system, research is performed on the immune system of many different animals. It is believed that fish evolved early in the evolution. Therefore it is interesting to investigate the immune system of fish. From the human immune system it is known that macrophages, a type of cells important within the immune system, depending on the infection can respond in different ways. Classical and alternative activation are two (extreme) ways of activation by macrophages. During this research on the immune system of carp we found that also carp macrophages can be both classically or alternatively activated. Furthermore we saw that this activation is dependent on the type of infection. Since we found that the two parasites used during our research activated the macrophages differently.
