Today, many of the agricultural products that are consumed in the West are cultivated by farmers in far-away countries and are shipped across the world to end up in our supermarket or grocery store. We are often unaware of the stories of the people involved in cultivating, transporting and marketing of these products. This thesis aims to contribute to our understanding of the social complexities and realities of local actors engaged in globalized networks of fresh agricultural commodities. The case study presented is that of the predominantly small-holder based fresh pineapple sector in Ivory Coast. The central objective of the study is to analyse how local actors in the Ivorian pineapple sector respond to globalization trends and developments according to their own 'reality' and how they internalize these trends and developments in their actions, practices and relationships. It is therefore hoped that this study will add an important dimension to our critical understanding and appraisal of more ‘rational’ perspectives on globalization of agriculture
