 This study applies and compares three land-use planning approaches in the coastal area of the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. The land use of the studied area is diverse, quickly shifting and strongly contrasting in requirements. Single, double and triple rice crops, vegetables, but also shrimp ponds, salt pans and mangrove forests occur. The selected approaches represent various levels of complexity and computation intensity. A participatory method (PLUP), the planning guidelines by FAO and the land-use planning and analysis system (LUPAS) were selected. They were applied with the same planning goal, in the same study area and year. The resulting land use plans were compared on their credibility and acceptability. The LUPAS plan was most appreciated by stakeholders. The PLUP plan agrees best with the actual land use realization. In the dynamic and contrasting land-use systems of the coastal Mekong Delta, PLUP seems to be the most suitable approach for short-term advice, but for longer-term planning a combination of methods will probably work best.
