Landscape ecology is an important field of science for sustainable land use and it is internationally growing as a science field and as practice field. Not only in the Netherlands, but in the whole North West European delta metropolis, in central Europe and in upcoming economies such as China, and Brazil the new questions are focusing on sustainable development of rural and urban areas, that coincides with landschape ecological cohernce. Important Dutch contributions have among others been the development of knowledge concerning metapopulations and based on that the development of ecological networks, wetlands and river research and their applications, nature restoration and the management of wetlands, historical ecology, culture landscapes, monitoring changes in bio-diversity and land use. The general theme of the congress “25 Years Landscape Ecology: Scientific Principles in Practice” expresses the application oriented approach of landscape ecology and the development of concepts aiming at coherency between urbaisation, nature, landscape and land use.
