15 Oct 2007
Unit: Wageningen UR
Location: Wageningen International Conference Centre (WICC), the Netherlands
Organisation: Wageningen UR; MVO; Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply; Brazilian State of Mato Grosso

In our global economy with a growing population, feeding the world is of the greatest importance. Agricultural products provide the basis for food, for animal feed and also biofuel. Specifically, soy offers all the potentials for human and animal life. This drives producers to expand and intensify the production of crops, like soy. In some parts of the world, this expansion competes with other important functions like biodiversity, nature conservation and human settlements. In Brazil the debate on competing claims is evident. Mato Grosso, the largest soy producing state in Brazil, is looking to balance the concern for the Amazon, the wetlands- Pantanal- and agricultural production.
This effort is closely monitored by the European Union, the NGO’s in Europe and the large importers. In The Netherlands, the Task Force Sustainable Soy with NGO’s discuss the strategies to manage the competing claims. The Dutch Government expressed her concern about the issue of sustainable soy production. Finally, the scientific community is highly involved in this debate and explores new strategies for balancing agricultural production, biodiversity and nature conservation within acceptable social conditions.

Objective
The Conference objective is to exchange the strategies for developing and managing sustainable agricultural production with a strong focus on soy.
More specifically the conference addresses:
- the Brazilian policy on sustainable agricultural production
- the Brazilian policy on sustainable soy production in Mato Grosso
- the role of the private sector in Brazil to enhance sustainable soy production
- the Netherlands’ strategies to encourage sustainable production in the global soy industry
- the Netherlands and Brazilian efforts to enhance biodiversity in sensitive areas in Mato Grosso
- the Brazilian research on sustainable agricultural production.

This conference will offer you a unique opportunity to get an in-depth understanding of the sustainability strategies in Brazil and to meet Brazilian partners from the public and private sector.
