The thesis deals with an indigenous orphan crop, which is native to Ethiopia. The crop has been in cultivation primarily for its tubers since 3000 B.C. In addition to its tubers, farmers also use its leaves as a cooked vegetable and as a medicine. P. edulis currently grows in mid and highland areas in some parts of Ethiopia. The study documented how and why farmers carry out different cultural practices such as tipping, and also tried to assess why there is a decline in area and production. Based on the survey, physiological and agronomic studies were carried out. Detailed, quantitative analyses were made of the development and growth of the crop, and of the effects of tipping, seed tuber size, seed tuber number and planting patterns on crop performance. This study is the first to analyse in quantitative details the production and crop physiology of this interesting orphan crop.
