Brassica rapa
is an important crop with a variety of forms, and a wide distribution in the world. It is used as oil seed and vegetable crop and a valuable source of diverse health-promoting metabolites. It also can serve as a model for genetic and molecular analysis in Brassica as it has the smallest genome size in this genus and rapid life cycle in some genotypes.
Two approaches to identify loci that impact traits, insertional mutagenesis and quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis, were employed to identify important traits’ relevant loci. With insertional mutagenesis approach (transposon activation tagging system) it is possible to make a mutant population of B. rapa but transformation-sensitive genotypes are needed. Through QTL analysis it is possible to select lines that are more efficient in transformation experiments. Also QTL analysis provides the information on the genetic control of breeding-related traits and health related compounds, an indication of the potential to improve nutritional quality in crop breeding programs.
