The financial crisis has developed into a worldwide economic decline. Economic growth has slowed down significantly, unemployment is on the rise as are the government deficits. Decline in demand in the food & agri sector has been relatively limited so far, but is large enough to cause low prices for most producers. In such economically difficult times it is (especially) important to keep investing in research and innovation. The more so in our domain, where we need to double the production in the coming decades, while reducing the impact on climate and environment. To meet these challenging demands we need to join forces, both internationally and among stakeholders. How to accomplish this is the key-subject of the Opening ceremony of the Academic Year in Wageningen.
