Lecture – guest valedictory address by Hans Opschoor

The world will negotiate a new post- Kyoto agreement on Global Warming in Copenhagen, December 2009. What should be done and who should do what are difficult choices given the global economic crisis. Prof. Dr. Hans Opschoor explores the crossroads between economy and environment. Can decarbonised economic growth be a solution for the Climate Crisis while addressing development issues and global inequality? And what should that imply for carbon emissions reductions in the developing countries?

Hans Opschoor is Professor of Sustainable Development Economics, Institute of Social Studies, The Hague (Netherlands) and Emeritus Professor of Environmental Economics, Free University Amsterdam; member, Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences; Honorary Professor at Chinese Academy of Sciences (Research Centre for Eco-Environmental Studies, Beijing) and at Nanjing Agricultural University (College of Land Management).

Associated with the Inter Governmental Panel on Climate Change and a Member of the UN Committee on Development Policy (with portfolio on sustainable development and climate change).
