Natural resources information systems in Australia - building information systems from sparse and variable scale legacy data - David Jacquier (CSIRO).
Australian agencies are providing online access to the best available information on soil and land resources in a consistent format. This is being achieved through the Australian Soil Resource Information System (ASRIS).
ASRIS has been designed to integrate soil information collected using both conventional and digital methods. The collation and harmonisation of legacy datasets has required significant effort. The current challenge is to produce national consistent datasets to support continental and global environmental modelling.
David Jacquier is a Project Officer for the Australian Collaborative Land Evaluation Program (ACLEP) at CSIRO Land and Water in Canberra. Over the last 20 years David has been involved in developing soil physics laboratory methods, quantitative methods for soil survey and is a co-author on Australian Soils: an illustrated compendium . Currently David is the manager of the Australian Soil Resource Information System (ASRIS) and he is one of the main authors of the Australian national soil information system and the Australian soils and landscapes monograph.
