Social and environmental systems have usually been viewed as single entities. This simple view conceals the complex nature of social-ecological systems. In practice, a human-nature system comprises of several, different and dynamic social and environmental units, actors and rules. This thesis entitled
Co-managing complex social-ecological systems
depicts this complexity in which
Lake Jipe wetland in Tanzania
is the central case. This case indicates interactions among multiple and dynamic rules, actors and environmental systems at different seasons and spaces. While some actors and rules stand for specific roles, others govern interlinking roles thereby establishing layers of the rules and actors in three studied sectoral (fisheries, agricultural and pastoral) systems at Lake Jipe. The layering concept extends the existing knowledge among co-management scholars by showing that human-environment systems are complex interdependent multiple systems. This thesis, thus, sheds light on how to study social-environmental systems using models that recognise diversities of these systems.
