Research on gendered land access in customary tenure areas focuses on women in a marital relationship where it is assumed women have secondary rights to land. Although HIV/AIDS and other socio-political factors are increasing pressure on the marital institution, there is a dearth of research to establish how women negotiate land outside the marital institution. This research focuses on divorced, widowed and never married adult women to establish how they negotiate access to land, community and other livelihood resources in communal farming areas in Zimbabwe. The research focuses on 22 single women and uses concepts of the hearth-hold, pathways, rural-urban connections and access to establish that single women’s land access in customary areas is more divergent than acknowledged in the existing literature and that patriarchy is not the only institution governing land access in customary tenure areas.
