You-tube images filmed on mobile phones globally circulated the graphic assassination of the young student Neda Soltan who rapidly became the face of protest in Iran. Nearly a year after her death, thousands from the ‘Green Movement’ risk military police crack downs and continue to protest in the streets of Tehran against the 2009 Iranian elections and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. How can we understand what is going on in Iran right now? Join  Prof. Touraj Atabaki (University of Leiden & International Institute of Social History) and Maaike Warnaar (University of Amsterdam) to unravel the historically complex dynamics between the state, religion and civil society. What is the Green Movement about and what can explain its emergence, its resilience and its future? From three decades of Islamic Revolution to Khatami and Ahmadinejad – where is Iranian society heading and how will state and religion figure into the future of its youth?
