Exhibition Wageningen UR Library,
9 April – 17 September 2010
Monday through Friday, 9 am – 5 pm.
One of the unique special collections of the Library contains a collection of approximately 94.000 aerial photographs from World War II, made by the Allied Forces during the liberation of the Netherlands in 1944-1945. Thanks to a grant from the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport these photographs are being digitally scanned within the framework of the Legacy of War Programme.
Due to this commemoration year the exhibition shows the use of the photographs then: the military interpretation of the aerial photographs during 1939-1945, especially the aerial photographs of Wageningen and surroundings, from Grebbeberg to Operation Market Garden.
The value of the collection now is shown in the postwar use of the aerial photographs for a variety in research of soil science and land use, archaeology, landscape and cultural history. The aerial photographs are used for detection of unexploded bombs, explosives, and other risk factors as well.
