Pakistani PhD student awarded grant for Wageningen research

 The NWO (Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research) has granted a "Mosaic subsidy" to the Pakistani researcher Ansa Wasim. The grant is intended for excellent, non-western graduates. As a result, the young researcher will be able to complete a four-year PhD research project at Wageningen University. In November, Minister Plasterk will congratulate her together with other grantees.

Ansa Wasim (1981) was selected by the NWO to work out the details of her research proposal. The detailed proposals were evaluated by scientists in the Netherlands abroad and by an expert selection committee.
Ansa Wasim will conduct her research at the Experimental Zoology Group of Wageningen University. She will focus on the signals that play a role in the formation of bones that are subjected to physical loads. These signals play an important role in creating and maintaining bone tissue. For example, in order to keeps their skeletal systems in good condition, astronauts in space must exercise regularly. This prevents bone tissue from breaking down.

For her research, Ansa Wasim will receive funding of €180,000. Throughout the Netherlands, 24 candidates were granted funding for their research proposals. The total amount of funding is jointly financed by the NWO and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. On 13 November, the winners for 2008 will receive a certificate from Minister Plasterk.
