The production costs of poultry in the Netherlands and a number of other EU member states are set to increase further in the coming years as a result of regulations pertaining to animal welfare, the environment and food safety. These are some of the conclusions drawn by LEI Wageningen UR in a study carried out for the Product Board for Poultry and Eggs and the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality.

The study compared the production costs of poultry in the Netherlands in 2007 with those in the important markets of Germany and the United Kingdom and with the production costs in rival countries France and Poland. Besides the developments in production costs in a number of European countries, a comparison has also been made with the developments in the United States and Brazil, the largest exporting countries on the global market.

During the coming years, both European and national legislation will come into force which will exert an influence on the production costs of poultry.
