Wageningen University and Research Centre is very pleased with the award of the NWO Spinoza prize 2008 to Prof. dr. Willem de Vos, Professor of Microbiology at Wageningen University. Moreover, we are very proud that the prize has been awarded for the second year in a row to an eminent Wageningen scientist. Willem de Vos received the prize for his pioneering research into the contribution of microorganisms such as bacteria to our food and our health. Last year, the Spinoza prize was awarded to the Wageningen entomologist Prof. dr. Marcel Dicke.

Wageningen UR sees the award of the Spinoza prize to Professor De Vos as an acknowledgement of its scientific excellence that goes hand-in-hand with important societal impact and that provides pioneering innovations in the areas of food production, health and the environment. De Vos has conducted far-reaching fundamental research in the fields of microbiology and biotechnology. The researcher and his research group enjoy an outstanding international reputation. His work is very influential; he has published several hundred articles that are frequently cited by other scientists, and he has supervised dozens of PhD students.
Willem de Vos (Apeldoorn, 1954) graduated cum laude in 1983 from the University of Groningen. Since 1987 he has worked at Wageningen University, since 1992 as full-time Professor of Microbiology. In 2006 he received the distinction of Finland Distinguished Professor and was also appointed as Professor at the universities of Helsinki and Turku in Finland.
