In the autumn of 2010, farm managers from Eastern Europe will follow a training course in Interactive Strategic Management (ISM). In particular, dairy farmers will be taking the course.

The countries which will potentially start ISM training are Lithuania, Slovenia, and Hungary. Providing farmers with training is one aspect of the study ‘Strategic management and entrepreneurship in Eastern Europe’. The researchers are hoping to discover in which ways farm managers in Eastern Europe are involved in strategically managing their businesses. In addition, they are posing the question, ‘What is the role and contribution of ISM to strategic management and entrepreneurial behaviour?’ The study is being carried out by LEI within the AgroCenter at Wageningen UR.

Market-oriented
The recent entry of a number of Eastern European countries into the EU is the impetus for the study. As a result of entering into the EU, agrarian entrepreneurs from these countries must often switch to more market-oriented production methods. They must also comply with the many EU regulations, such as production and product regulations (cross-compliance), milk quotas, and free market competition.

Entrepreneurship
The EU offers advantages to Eastern European farm managers, such as access to more markets and price compensation aid. But the regulations for production and market forces could change in the near future. In order for the farmers to keep their businesses running, entrepreneurship and strategic management are of great importance.
