The guidelines for food-processing companies on producing sustainability reports about their companies have been officially launched and presented at two international congresses. These guidelines are those published by the GRI (Global Reporting Initiative), and have been compiled with LEI’s assistance.
Around 300 delegates from the food industry attended the session during the 3rd Conference on Sustainable Agriculture ‘The art of farming' in Brussels in May 2010. LEI researcher Koen Boone had previously launched the GRI guidelines during The Amsterdam Global Conference on Sustainability and Transparency.
Companies are increasingly expected to account for their role in such issues as animal welfare and the environment. Many companies therefore produce sustainability reports, in which they report on their impact on society. For this reason, the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is developing globally-applicable guidelines clarifying the indicators that such reports must contain.
