Companies are increasingly expected to account for their role in such issues as animal welfare and the environment. Many companies therefore produce sustainability reports, in which they report on their impact on society.

It is important that they report on the issues that we as a society want to know about, in a way which makes it possible to check whether improvements are made over time and so that companies can be compared with each other. For this reason, the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is developing globally-applicable guidelines clarifying the indicators that such reports must contain.

LEI, part of Wageningen UR, has been supporting an international group of businesses and NGOs in developing guidelines for the food-processing industry.
