Food and Biobased Research
Wageningen UR Food & Biobased Research and Phliss have been commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality to carry out research into meals in care institutions. The aim of the research is to heighten enjoyment of meals and examine the impact this has on the health of the clients and the finances of the institution. A start is also being made on examining the effects of a good meal on the medication patterns of clients.
The researchers will monitor what clients eat and drink, their perception of meals, any supplementary feeding and the level of care needed. The research will focus on finding benefits for the health and wellbeing of the clients. Another key area is establishing whether this generates extra savings or extra costs for the institution. Marchel Gorselink, Business Development Manager, Wageningen UR: "We are going to help elderly people in care institutions enjoy their meals more by using organic products and enhancing the atmosphere at mealtimes."
Health and medication
The project will also make a start on measuring the effects of eating a good meal, linked to health factors and medication patterns. This will take account of supplementary feeding, the level of help required, medication and the costs involved, and will result in recommendations for follow-up research.
Findings
Initial findings from the project are expected in June 2010. They will relate to consumption and enjoyment of meals, supplementary feeding and level of care required. The findings will be used to support management in care institutions and advise them on policy.
