Sustainability is a central concept in impact assessment of policies and programmes in many countries as well as in international organisations such as the European Union and the United Nations. Since it is the yardstick by which policies are measured it is important to have a clear idea of what it means. Tom Kuhlman of LEI and John Farrington of the University of Aberdeen have written an article in which the various meanings of the concept are critically examined and a definition is proposed which is different from the one most frequently adopted.
