Unit: Wageningen UR Glastuinbouw

Thousands of people are visiting Wageningen UR Greenhouse Horticulture and the Innovation and Demo Centre Greenhouse as Energy Source each year. There were 3000 visitors in 2009 and already well over a 1000 during the first four months of 2010.

The Minister of Agriculture of Taiwan, Dr. Chen Wu-Hsiung, was among the more than 1000 visitors in 2010. Karen Chan, Deputy Minister Research of the Ministry of Agriculture of Ontario in Canada, was another visitor to Bleiswijk.

Using current research as examples, the efforts of the Dutch greenhouse sector to achieve further sustainability are pointed out during the visits of politicians and ministerial staff. With these presentations we wish to make a contribution to the positive image of our sector. Recently, film material on this subject has been shot for a non-specialist scientific programme of the Italian television (RAI UNO, Superquark) which will be broadcasted in June 2010.

Visitors during the Plant Health Day in March 2009
Visitors from the primary horticultural sector are especially visiting the crop-specific or theme-specific days or they are visiting Wageningen UR Greenhouse Horticulture in the context of the guidance of running research projects.

Besides growers, many politicians, staff of regional, national and international governments, journalists, scientists and students are visiting our sites in Wageningen or Bleiswijk.

They are often very interested in the way in which greenhouse horticulture and research in the Netherlands are organised as well as in current and future innovations. In 2009 several guests visited the site in Bleiswijk, including Minister Verburg of the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV), Abdullah A Alothman: president of the Royal University of Saudi Arabia; Maurice Hinchey: Member of Congress from the US; Minister Horner of Advanced Technology and Education (photo) and Minister Renner of Environment, both from Alberta, Canada.
