This year, Wageningen University will award prizes for Master’s theses and a publication. On Thursday 9 February the board of Wageningen University Fund will present the WUF-KLV thesis and publication prizes for 2011. Four students will receive a prize for an excellent Master’s thesis in the academic year 2009/2010. One student will receive a prize for a graduation publication in the same year.
Wageningen University Fund received a total of 27 nominations, 22 for the thesis prizes and 5 for the publication prize. The jury judged the theses and publications on the basis of scientific merit, written presentation, practical relevance and the quality of the academic research. The winners will receive €500, a replica of the Wageningen Tree and a certificate with a classification. The prizes are sponsored by the KLV alumni association.
The prize-winners are:
• Emma van der Woude, student Biologie, chairholder prof. dr. M. Dicke.
Thesis title: ‘Tiny Eggheads: Brain and body size relationship in the parasitic wasp Trichogramma evanescens’.
• Ingeborg Kluts, student Environmental Sciences, chairholder prof. dr. R. Leemans.
Thesis title: ‘Towards environmentally sustainable Pangasius production in the Mekong Delta’.
• Francesco Cecchi, MSc International Development-Rural Economic Development, chairholder prof. E. Bulte.
Thesis tilte: ‘Does Market Experience Promote Rational Choice? Experimental Evidence from Rural Ethiopia’.
The publication prize will be awarded to:
• Jelke J. Fros, Msc Biotechnology, moleculair/cellulair, chairholder prof. dr. J.M. Vlak. Thesis title: ‘Chikungunya virus nonstructural protein 2 inhibits type I/II interferon-stimulated JAK-STAT signaling’
The prize for practical relevance will be awarded to:
• Jan Wouter Kruyt, student Aerospace engineering, chairholder prof.dr.ir. J.L. van Leeuwen. Thesis title: ‘Comparing hover performance of hummingbird and model wings’.
